Sabrina ,Klawock ,Alaska – salmon blackcod ,Dungeness crab
In 2012 , John Johanson heard the Sabrina might be up for sale as the owner , Jeff Koetje ,was having Fred Wahl Marie Construction in Reedsport ,Ore.,build him a new boat .Johanson wanted his son to have his boat , Alaskan Rose ,which he owned for decades. So when Johanson ,saw Koetje on the docks in Seatlle , he said , ” I want to buy that boat “.
There were a couple of reasons behind the desire to purchase the Sabrina ;its named after his niece ,and Johanson´s father ,Rudy ,had that boat built ,but was forced to sell after a divorce in the mid-1980.
When the Sabrina was built in Seatlle in 1982 ,she was considered big .But in the more than three decades since the Sabrina was built , 58-foot seiners have gotten bigger ,though the Sabrina still holds her own .
Johanson had had to do significant upgrades to account for 30-plus year of wear and tear ,including completely remodeling the gallery .
Now three generations of Johansons chase salmon together in Southeast Alaska .Besides John ,there´s his 25-year-old son ,Rudy ,at the helm of the Alaskan Rose ,and Grampa Rudy who ,at 79 years old ,still seines every summer on his boat the R&R.
